“When you give to the poor, don’t be like the hypocrites. They blow trumpets in the synagogues and on the streets so that people will see them and honor them. I tell you the truth, those hypocrites already have their full reward.

They give freely to the poor. The things they do are right and will continue forever. They will be given great honor.

The wicked borrow and don’t pay back, but those who do right give freely to others.

Being kind to the poor is like lending to the Lord; he will reward you for what you have done.

Many people claim to be loyal, but it is hard to find a trustworthy person.

Invest what you have in several different businesses, because you don’t know what disasters might happen.

I send it to fight against a nation that is separated from God. I am angry with those people, so I command Assyria to fight against them, to take their wealth from them, to trample them down like dirt in the streets.

Share your food with the hungry and bring poor, homeless people into your own homes. When you see someone who has no clothes, give him yours, and don’t refuse to help your own relatives.

So the Lord is not happy with the young people, nor will he show mercy to the orphans and widows. All the people are separated from God and are very evil; they all speak lies. But the Lord is still angry; his hand is still raised to strike down the people.

“Put the trumpet to your lips and give the warning! The enemy swoops down on the Lord’s people like an eagle. The Israelites have broken my agreement and have turned against my teachings.

You are hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he said about you:

And in the morning you say that it will be a rainy day, because the sky is dark and red. You see these signs in the sky and know what they mean. In the same way, you see the things that I am doing now, but you don’t know their meaning.

But knowing that these leaders were trying to trick him, Jesus said, “You hypocrites! Why are you trying to trap me?

“They do good things so that other people will see them. They enlarge the little boxes holding Scriptures that they wear, and they make their special prayer clothes very long.

Those Pharisees and teachers of the law love to have the most important seats at feasts and in the synagogues.

Then the master will cut him in pieces and send him away to be with the hypocrites, where people will cry and grind their teeth with pain.

I tell you the truth, nothing will disappear from the law until heaven and earth are gone. Not even the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will be lost until everything has happened.

“When you fast, don’t put on a sad face like the hypocrites. They make their faces look sad to show people they are fasting. I tell you the truth, those hypocrites already have their full reward.

So when you give to the poor, don’t let anyone know what you are doing.

“When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites. They love to stand in the synagogues and on the street corners and pray so people will see them. I tell you the truth, they already have their full reward.

You hypocrite! First, take the wood out of your own eye. Then you will see clearly to take the dust out of your friend’s eye.

They love to have the most important seats in the synagogues and at feasts.

Jesus answered, “Isaiah was right when he spoke about you hypocrites. He wrote, ‘These people show honor to me with words, but their hearts are far from me.

So give what is in your dishes to the poor, and then you will be fully clean.

How terrible for you Pharisees, because you love to have the most important seats in the synagogues, and you love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces.

Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Get for yourselves purses that will not wear out, the treasure in heaven that never runs out, where thieves can’t steal and moths can’t destroy.

Hypocrites! You know how to understand the appearance of the earth and sky. Why don’t you understand what is happening now?

The Lord answered, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you untie your work animals and lead them to drink water every day—even on the Sabbath day?

“Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around wearing fancy clothes, and they love for people to greet them with respect in the marketplaces. They love to have the most important seats in the synagogues and at feasts.

“But how terrible it will be for you who are rich, because you have had your easy life.

How can you say to your friend, ‘Friend, let me take that little piece of dust out of your eye’ when you cannot see that big piece of wood in your own eye! You hypocrite! First, take the wood out of your own eye. Then you will see clearly to take the dust out of your friend’s eye.

Since he was the one who kept the money box, some of the followers thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the feast or to give something to the poor.

“I don’t need praise from people.

You try to get praise from each other, but you do not try to get the praise that comes from the only God. So how can you believe?

Those who teach their own ideas are trying to get honor for themselves. But those who try to bring honor to the one who sent them speak the truth, and there is nothing false in them.

Cornelius was a religious man. He and all the other people who lived in his house worshiped the true God. He gave much of his money to the poor and prayed to God often.

He said, ‘Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and has seen that you give to the poor and remembers you.

Cornelius stared at the angel. He became afraid and said, “What do you want, Lord?” The angel said, “God has heard your prayers. He has seen that you give to the poor, and he remembers you.

The followers all decided to help the believers who lived in Judea, as much as each one could.

“After being away from Jerusalem for several years, I went back to bring money to my people and to offer sacrifices.

In the city of Joppa there was a follower named Tabitha (whose Greek name was Dorcas). She was always doing good deeds and kind acts.

Whoever has the gift of encouraging others should encourage. Whoever has the gift of giving to others should give freely. Anyone who has the gift of being a leader should try hard when he leads. Whoever has the gift of showing mercy to others should do so with joy.

I may give away everything I have, and I may even give my body as an offering to be burned. But I gain nothing if I do not have love.

The only thing they asked us was to remember to help the poor—something I really wanted to do.

Those who are stealing must stop stealing and start working. They should earn an honest living for themselves. Then they will have something to share with those who are poor.

We were not looking for human praise, from you or anyone else,

Tell the rich people to do good, to be rich in doing good deeds, to be generous and ready to share.

I have great joy and comfort, my brother, because the love you have shown to God’s people has refreshed them.

Do not forget to do good to others, and share with them, because such sacrifices please God.

Anyone who speaks should speak words from God. Anyone who serves should serve with the strength God gives so that in everything God will be praised through Jesus Christ. Power and glory belong to him forever and ever. Amen.

Saul answered, “I have sinned. But please honor me in front of the elders of my people and in front of the Israelites. Come back with me so that I can worship the Lord your God.”
