The Son of Man came, eating and drinking, and people say, ‘Look at him! He eats too much and drinks too much wine, and he is a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved to be right by what she does.”

If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen to the church, then treat him like a person who does not believe in God or like a tax collector.

And if you are nice only to your friends, you are no better than other people. Even those who don’t know God are nice to their friends.

Later, as Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and “sinners” were eating there with Jesus and his followers. Many people like this followed Jesus.

When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw Jesus eating with the tax collectors and “sinners,” they asked his followers, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

The tax collectors and sinners all came to listen to Jesus.

“The tax collector, standing at a distance, would not even look up to heaven. But he beat on his chest because he was so sad. He said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’

A man was there named Zacchaeus, who was a very important tax collector, and he was wealthy.

All the people saw this and began to complain, “Jesus is staying with a sinner!”

Even tax collectors came to John to be baptized. They said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?”

Then Levi gave a big dinner for Jesus at his house. Many tax collectors and other people were eating there, too.

But the Pharisees and the men who taught the law for the Pharisees began to complain to Jesus’ followers, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

(When the people, including the tax collectors, heard this, they all agreed that God’s teaching was good, because they had been baptized by John.

The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! He eats too much and drinks too much wine, and he is a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
