Then the woman said, “In the past people would say, ‘Ask for advice at Abel,’ and the problem would be solved.

Jehoshaphat appointed judges in all the land, in each of the strong, walled cities of Judah.

“You must not murder anyone.

There the person will be safe from the dead person’s relative who has the duty of punishing the killer. He will not die before he receives a fair trial in court.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You must not be guilty of adultery.’

“You have heard that it was said to our people long ago, ‘Don’t break your promises, but keep the promises you make to the Lord.’

“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemies.’

Appoint judges and officers for your tribes in every town the Lord your God is giving you; they must judge the people fairly.

Everyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderers have eternal life in them.
