“If a man has a hundred sheep but one of the sheep gets lost, he will leave the other ninety-nine on the hill and go to look for the lost sheep.

At this time the Lord spoke his word to the prophet Elijah the Tishbite. The Lord said,

I have wandered like a lost sheep. Look for your servant, because I have not forgotten your commands.

We all have wandered away like sheep; each of us has gone his own way. But the Lord has put on him the punishment for all the evil we have done.

“My people have been like lost sheep. Their leaders have led them in the wrong way and made them wander around in the mountains and hills. They forgot where their resting place was.

As a shepherd takes care of his scattered flock when it is found, I will take care of my sheep. I will save them from all the places where they were scattered on a cloudy and dark day.

I will search for the lost, bring back those that strayed away, put bandages on those that were hurt, and make the weak strong. But I will destroy those sheep that are fat and strong. I will tend the sheep with fairness.

They will not be led captive by the nations again. The wild animals will not eat them, but they will live safely, and no one will make them afraid.

You have not made the weak strong. You have not healed the sick or put bandages on those that were hurt. You have not brought back those who strayed away or searched for the lost. But you have ruled the sheep with cruel force.

My flock wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. They were scattered all over the face of the earth, and no one searched or looked for them.

Jesus answered, “If any of you has a sheep, and it falls into a ditch on the Sabbath day, you will help it out of the ditch.

I tell you the truth, if he finds it he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that were never lost.

“Tell me what you think about this: A man had two sons. He went to the first son and said, ‘Son, go and work today in my vineyard.’

“What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They answered, “The Christ is the Son of David.”

I am speaking to you as to reasonable people; judge for yourselves what I say.

You were like sheep that wandered away, but now you have come back to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
