Then his followers asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

And if you will believe what they said, you will believe that John is Elijah, whom they said would come.

They answered, “Some say you are John the Baptist. Others say you are Elijah, and still others say you are Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

Jesus answered, “They are right to say that Elijah is coming and that he will make everything the way it should be.

Then they asked Jesus, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

So they asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He answered, “No, I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” they asked. He answered, “No.”

“If you are not the Christ or Elijah or the Prophet, why do you baptize people?”
