Matthew 16:21

From that time on Jesus began telling his followers that he must go to Jerusalem, where the Jewish elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of the law would make him suffer many things. He told them he must be killed and then be raised from the dead on the third day.

Jonah was in the stomach of the big fish for three days and three nights. In the same way, the Son of Man will be in the grave three days and three nights.

Peter took Jesus aside and told him not to talk like that. He said, “God save you from those things, Lord! Those things will never happen to you!”

I tell you the truth, some people standing here will see the Son of Man coming with his kingdom before they die.”

While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve apostles, came up. With him were many people carrying swords and clubs who had been sent from the leading priests and the Jewish elders of the people.

When the leading priests and the elders accused Jesus, he said nothing.

They said, “Sir, we remember that while that liar was still alive he said, ‘After three days I will rise from the dead.’

He is not here. He has risen from the dead as he said he would. Come and see the place where his body was.

Then Jesus began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and that he would be rejected by the Jewish elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of the law. He told them that the Son of Man must be killed and then rise from the dead after three days.

Jesus answered, “They are right to say that Elijah must come first and make everything the way it should be. But why does the Scripture say that the Son of Man will suffer much and that people will treat him as if he were nothing?

But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by the people of this time.

He said to them, “It is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day

They appeared in heavenly glory, talking about his departure which he would soon bring about in Jerusalem.
