“But I will send you Elijah the prophet before that great and terrifying day of the Lord’s judging.

So he said to his servants, “Jesus is John the Baptist, who has risen from the dead. That is why he can work these miracles.”

About that time John the Baptist began preaching in the desert area of Judea.

King Herod heard about Jesus, because he was now well known. Some people said, “He is John the Baptist, who has risen from the dead. That is why he can work these miracles.”

Others said, “He is Elijah.” Other people said, “Jesus is a prophet, like the prophets who lived long ago.”

One time when Jesus was praying alone, his followers were with him, and he asked them, “Who do the people say I am?”

Then Jesus asked, “But who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ from God.”

So they asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He answered, “No, I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” they asked. He answered, “No.”

“If you are not the Christ or Elijah or the Prophet, why do you baptize people?”

When the people heard Jesus’ words, some of them said, “This man really is the Prophet.”

They asked the man again, “What do you say about him since it was your eyes he opened?” The man answered, “He is a prophet.”
