This is what the Lord says: “People of Israel, you say I divorced your mother. Then where is the paper that proves it? Or do you think I sold you to pay a debt? Because of the evil things you did, I sold you. Because of the times she turned against me, your mother was sent away.

The Lord said to me, “Unfaithful Israel had a better excuse than wicked Judah.

“Our father died in the desert. He was not one of Korah’s followers who came together against the Lord, but he died because of his own sin, and he had no sons.

“Later, that same servant found another servant who owed him a few dollars. The servant grabbed him around the neck and said, ‘Pay me the money you owe me!’

Forgive us for our sins, just as we have forgiven those who sinned against us.

But Jesus answered, “You give them something to eat.” They said to him, “We would all have to work a month to earn enough money to buy that much bread!”

Forgive us for our sins, because we forgive everyone who has done wrong to us. And do not cause us to be tempted.’ ”

But the servant who does not know what his master wants and does things that should be punished will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded. And from the one trusted with much, much more will be expected.

What about those eighteen people who died when the tower of Siloam fell on them? Do you think they were more sinful than all the others who live in Jerusalem?

Jesus said to the Pharisee, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” Simon said, “Teacher, tell me.”

I tell you that her many sins are forgiven, so she showed great love. But the person who is forgiven only a little will love only a little.”

Everyone has sinned and fallen short of God’s glorious standard,

The law came to make sin worse. But when sin grew worse, God’s grace increased.
