Suppose someone has enough to live and sees a brother or sister in need, but does not help. Then God’s love is not living in that person.

Tell the rich people to do good, to be rich in doing good deeds, to be generous and ready to share.

When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “There is still one more thing you need to do. Sell everything you have and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.”

If people say, “I love God,” but hate their brothers or sisters, they are liars. Those who do not love their brothers and sisters, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have never seen.

Religion that God accepts as pure and without fault is this: caring for orphans or widows who need help, and keeping yourself free from the world’s evil influence.

So give what is in your dishes to the poor, and then you will be fully clean.

“Then the King will answer, ‘I tell you the truth, anything you did for even the least of my people here, you also did for me.’

So, O king, please accept my advice. Stop sinning and do what is right. Stop doing wicked things and be kind to the poor. Then you might continue to be successful.”

God is fair; he will not forget the work you did and the love you showed for him by helping his people. And he will remember that you are still helping them.

He said, ‘Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and has seen that you give to the poor and remembers you.

Cornelius stared at the angel. He became afraid and said, “What do you want, Lord?” The angel said, “God has heard your prayers. He has seen that you give to the poor, and he remembers you.

Cornelius was a religious man. He and all the other people who lived in his house worshiped the true God. He gave much of his money to the poor and prayed to God often.

Since he was the one who kept the money box, some of the followers thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the feast or to give something to the poor.

But Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “I will give half of my possessions to the poor. And if I have cheated anyone, I will pay back four times more.”

He does not mistreat anyone but returns what was given as a promise for a loan. He does not rob other people. He gives bread to the hungry and clothes to those who have none.

Those who are stealing must stop stealing and start working. They should earn an honest living for themselves. Then they will have something to share with those who are poor.

Command those who are rich with things of this world not to be proud. Tell them to hope in God, not in their uncertain riches. God richly gives us everything to enjoy.

My brothers and sisters, if people say they have faith, but do nothing, their faith is worth nothing. Can faith like that save them?
