So why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, and I tell you, John is more than a prophet.

Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they believed John was a prophet.

But if we say, ‘It was from people,’ we are afraid of what the crowd will do because they all believe that John was a prophet.”

They wanted to arrest him, but they were afraid of the people, because the people believed that Jesus was a prophet.

But they said, “We must not do it during the feast, because the people might cause a riot.”

The Jewish leaders knew that the story was about them. So they wanted to find a way to arrest Jesus, but they were afraid of the people. So the leaders left him and went away.

“Now you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High God. You will go before the Lord to prepare his way.

They argued about this, saying, “If we answer, ‘John’s baptism was from God,’ Jesus will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’

So they answered that they didn’t know where it came from.

But the Pharisees and experts on the law refused to accept God’s plan for themselves; they did not let John baptize them.)

and many people came to him and said, “John never did a miracle, but everything John said about this man is true.”

Then the captain and his men went out and brought the apostles back. But the soldiers did not use force, because they were afraid the people would stone them to death.
