He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of King David, his ancestor.

But your family and your kingdom will continue always before me. Your throne will last forever.’ ”

The Lord made a promise to David, a sure promise that he will not take back. He promised, “I will make one of your descendants rule as king after you.

If your sons keep my agreement and the rules that I teach them, then their sons after them will rule on your throne forever and ever.”

Then a new loyal king will come; this faithful king will be from the family of David. He will judge fairly and do what is right.

“ ‘If you obey this command, kings who sit on David’s throne will come through the gates of Jerusalem with their officers. They will come riding in chariots and on horses, along with the people of Judah and Jerusalem. And the city of Jerusalem will have people living in it forever.

‘Hear the word of the Lord, king of Judah, who rules from David’s throne. You and your officers, and your people who come through these gates, listen!

“During the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up another kingdom that will never be destroyed or given to another group of people. This kingdom will crush all the other kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will continue forever.

This is the family history of Jesus Christ. He came from the family of David, and David came from the family of Abraham.

On the Judgment Day, the Queen of the South will stand up with you people who live today. She will show that you are guilty, because she came from far away to listen to Solomon’s wise teaching. And I tell you that someone greater than Solomon is here.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All power in heaven and on earth is given to me.

“I baptize you with water to show that your hearts and lives have changed. But there is one coming after me who is greater than I am, whose sandals I am not good enough to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

But Jesus said nothing; he did not answer. The high priest asked Jesus another question: “Are you the Christ, the Son of the blessed God?”

The man shouted in a loud voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I command you in God’s name not to torture me!”

John will be a great man for the Lord. He will never drink wine or beer, and even from birth, he will be filled with the Holy Spirit.

The angel said to Mary, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will cover you. For this reason the baby will be holy and will be called the Son of God.

“Now you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High God. You will go before the Lord to prepare his way.

John answered everyone, “I baptize you with water, but there is one coming who is greater than I am. I am not good enough to untie his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without hoping to get anything back. Then you will have a great reward, and you will be children of the Most High God, because he is kind even to people who are ungrateful and full of sin.

The crowd said, “We have heard from the law that the Christ will live forever. So why do you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”

We believe and know that you are the Holy One from God.”

This girl followed Paul and us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God. They are telling you how you can be saved.”

He was a prophet and knew God had promised him that he would make a person from David’s family a king just as he was.

“So, all the people of Israel should know this truly: God has made Jesus —the man you nailed to the cross—both Lord and Christ.”

“But the Most High does not live in houses that people build with their hands. As the prophet says:

“Write this to the angel of the church in Philadelphia: “This is what the One who is holy and true, who holds the key of David, says. When he opens a door, no one can close it. And when he closes it, no one can open it.
