If the Temple is destroyed, everyone who passes by will be shocked. They will make fun of you and ask, ‘Why did the Lord do this terrible thing to this land and this Temple?’

Look! The Lord will destroy the earth and leave it empty; he will ruin the surface of the land and scatter its people.

I will ruin my field. It will not be trimmed or hoed, and weeds and thorns will grow there. I will command the clouds not to rain on it.”

The Lord All-Powerful said this to me: “The fine houses will be destroyed; the large and beautiful houses will be left empty.

Then I asked, “Lord, how long should I do this?” He answered, “Until the cities are destroyed and the people are gone, until there are no people left in the houses, until the land is destroyed and left empty.

Your holy cities are empty like the desert. Jerusalem is like a desert; it is destroyed.

They have turned my field into a desert that is wilted and dead. The whole country is an empty desert, because no one who lives there cares.

So Judah’s country will become an empty desert. People will not stop making fun of it. They will shake their heads as they pass by; they will be shocked at how the country was destroyed.

I will completely destroy this city. People will make fun of it and shake their heads when they pass by. They will be shocked when they see how the city was destroyed.

That whole area will be an empty desert, and these nations will be slaves of the king of Babylon for seventy years.

I served this wine to the people of Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, and the kings and officers of Judah, so they would become a ruin. Then people would be shocked and would insult them and speak evil of them. And so it has been to this day.

Like a lion, he has left his den. Their land has been destroyed because of the terrible war he brought, because of his fierce anger.

“You are saying, ‘Our country is an empty desert, without people or animals.’ But this is what the Lord says: It is now quiet in the streets of Jerusalem and in the towns of Judah, without people or animals, but it will be noisy there soon!

“The Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, says: You saw all the terrible things I brought on Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, which are ruins today with no one living in them.

Then he could not be patient with you any longer. He hated the terrible things you did. So he made your country an empty desert, where no one lives. Other people curse that country. And so it is today.

“I, the Lord, will make the city of Jerusalem a heap of ruins, a home for wild dogs. I will destroy the cities of Judah so no one can live there.”

Kings of the earth and people of the world could not believe that enemies and foes could enter the gates of Jerusalem.

Mount Zion is empty, and wild dogs wander around it.

Then the nations around you will shame you and make fun of you. You will be a warning and a terror to them. This will happen when I punish you in my great anger. I, the Lord, have spoken.

My God, pay attention and hear me. Open your eyes and see all the terrible things that have happened to us. See how our lives have been ruined and what has happened to the city that is called by your name. We do not ask these things because we are good; instead, we ask because of your mercy.

During Darius’ first year as king, I, Daniel, was reading the Scriptures. I saw that the Lord told Jeremiah that Jerusalem would be empty ruins for seventy years.

Fig trees may not grow figs, and there may be no grapes on the vines. There may be no olives growing and no food growing in the fields. There may be no sheep in the pens and no cattle in the barns.

“When you see armies all around Jerusalem, you will know it will soon be destroyed.

You will become a hated thing to the nations where the Lord sends you; they will laugh at you and make fun of you.
