On the third day Joseph said to them, “I am a God-fearing man. Do this and I will let you live:

Now you plan to make the people of Judah and Jerusalem your slaves, but you also have sinned against the Lord your God.

“If I have been unfair to my male and female slaves when they had a complaint against me,

how could I tell God what I did? What will I answer when he asks me to explain what I’ve done?

But the nurses feared God, so they did not do as the king told them; they let all the boy babies live.

Because the nurses feared God, he gave them families of their own.

After a long time, the king of Egypt died. The people of Israel groaned, because they were forced to work very hard. When they cried for help, God heard them.

The Lord said, “I have seen the troubles my people have suffered in Egypt, and I have heard their cries when the Egyptian slave masters hurt them. I am concerned about their pain,

I have heard the cries of the people of Israel, and I have seen the way the Egyptians have made life hard for them.

The king’s slave masters had made the Israelite foremen responsible for the work the people did. The Egyptian slave masters beat these men and asked them, “Why aren’t you making as many bricks as you made in the past?”

I was angry with my people, so I rejected those who belonged to me. I gave them to you, but you showed them no mercy. You even made the old people work very hard.

They say, ‘To honor you we had special days when we fasted, but you didn’t see. We humbled ourselves to honor you, but you didn’t notice.’ ” But the Lord says, “You do what pleases yourselves on these special days, and you are unfair to your workers.

You have not made the weak strong. You have not healed the sick or put bandages on those that were hurt. You have not brought back those who strayed away or searched for the lost. But you have ruled the sheep with cruel force.

You must not cheat each other, but you must respect your God. I am the Lord your God.

This is because the Israelites are my servants, and I brought them out of slavery in Egypt. They must not become slaves again.

“ ‘Your men and women slaves must come from other nations around you; from them you may buy slaves.

and you may even pass them on to your children after you die; you can make them slaves forever. But you must not rule cruelly over your own people, the Israelites.

But he will live like a hired person with the foreigner every year; don’t let the foreigner rule cruelly over him.

The Lord All-Powerful says, “Then I will come to you and judge you. I will be quick to testify against those who take part in evil magic, adultery, and lying under oath, those who cheat workers of their pay and who cheat widows and orphans, those who are unfair to foreigners, and those who do not respect me.

Masters, in the same way, be good to your slaves. Do not threaten them. Remember that the One who is your Master and their Master is in heaven, and he treats everyone alike.

When you were tired and worn out, they met you on the road and attacked all those lagging behind. They were not afraid of God.

Masters, give what is good and fair to your slaves. Remember that you have a Master in heaven.
