Leviticus 16:21

New Century Version

He will put both his hands on the head of the living goat, and he will confess over it all the sins and crimes of Israel. In this way Aaron will put the people’s sins on the goat’s head. Then he will send the goat away into the desert, and a man who has been appointed will lead the goat away.

As Ezra was praying and confessing and crying and throwing himself down in front of the Temple, a large group of Israelite men, women, and children gathered around him who were also crying loudly.

Then I confessed my sins to you and didn’t hide my guilt. I said, “I will confess my sins to the Lord,” and you forgave my guilt.Selah

I know about my wrongs, and I can’t forget my sin.

“Bring the bull to the front of the Meeting Tent, and Aaron and his sons must put their hands on the bull’s head.

If you hide your sins, you will not succeed. If you confess and reject them, you will receive mercy.

We all have wandered away like sheep; each of us has gone his own way. But the Lord has put on him the punishment for all the evil we have done.

He must put his hand on the animal’s head, and the Lord will accept it to remove the person’s sin so he will belong to God.

“When Aaron has finished making the Most Holy Place, the Meeting Tent, and the altar ready for service to the Lord, he will offer the living goat.

So the goat will carry on itself all the people’s sins to a lonely place in the desert. The man who leads the goat will let it loose there.

“ ‘But maybe the people will confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors; maybe they will admit they turned against me and sinned against me,

“ ‘When anyone is guilty of any of these things, he must tell how he sinned.

We believe with our hearts, and so we are made right with God. And we declare with our mouths that we believe, and so we are saved.

Christ had no sin, but God made him become sin so that in Christ we could become right with God.
