Elisha said to the king of Israel, “I have nothing to do with you. Go to the prophets of your father and to the prophets of your mother!” The king of Israel said to Elisha, “No, the Lord has called us three kings together to hand us over to the Moabites.”

The king sent a messenger to Elisha, who was sitting in his house with the elders. But before the messenger arrived, Elisha said to them, “See, this murderer is sending men to cut off my head. When the messenger arrives, shut the door and hold it; don’t let him in. The sound of his master’s feet is behind him.”

Elisha was still talking with the leaders when the messenger arrived. The king said, “This trouble has come from the Lord. Why should I wait for the Lord any longer?”

“What has happened to us is our own fault. We have done evil things, and our guilt is great. But you, our God, have punished us less than we deserve; you have left a few of us alive.

and tell you the secrets of wisdom, because wisdom has two sides. Know this: God has even forgotten some of your sin.

Why do you speak out your anger against God? Why do these words pour out of your mouth?

Some fools turned against God and suffered for the evil they did.

People’s own foolishness ruins their lives, but in their minds they blame the Lord.

Your people have become weak. They fall down and lie on every street corner, like animals caught in a net. They have felt the full anger of the Lord and have heard God’s angry shout.

How terrible it will be for me because of my injury. My wound cannot be healed. Yet I told myself, “This is my sickness; I must suffer through it.”

Why are you crying out about your injury? There is no cure for your pain. I did these things to you because of your great guilt, because of your many sins.

The Lord’s love never ends; his mercies never stop.

which made me turn against them and send them into the land of their enemies. If these disobedient people are sorry for what they did and accept punishment for their sin,

The land will be left empty by its people, and it will enjoy its time of rest as it lies bare without them. Then those who are left alive will accept the punishment for their sins. They will learn that they were punished because they hated my laws and refused to obey my rules.

I sinned against the Lord, so he was angry with me, but he will defend my case in court. He will bring about what is right for me. Then he will bring me out into the light, and I will see him set things right.

He asked the Lord, “Why have you brought me, your servant, this trouble? What have I done wrong that you made me responsible for all these people?

The next day all the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron and said, “You have killed the Lord’s people.”

The people of Israel said to Moses, “We are going to die! We are destroyed. We are all destroyed!

They were burned by the great heat, and they cursed the name of God, who had control over these disasters. But the people refused to change their hearts and lives and give glory to God.
