As Manasseh suffered, he begged the Lord his God for help and humbled himself before the God of his ancestors.

“I have sewed rough cloth over my skin to show my sadness and have buried my face in the dust.

“I am not worthy; I cannot answer you anything, so I will put my hand over my mouth.

So there is hope for you in the future,” says the Lord. “Your children will return to their own land.

You will remember what you did and feel ashamed. You will not open your mouth again because of your shame, when I forgive you for all the things you have done, says the Lord God.’ ”

Who knows? Maybe he will turn back to you and leave behind a blessing for you. Grain and drink offerings belong to the Lord your God.

Who knows? Maybe God will change his mind. Maybe he will stop being angry, and then we will not die.

Come to the Lord, all you who are not proud, who obey his laws. Do what is right. Learn to be humble. Maybe you will escape on the day the Lord shows his anger.
