My friends, do not try to punish others when they wrong you, but wait for God to punish them with his anger. It is written: “I will punish those who do wrong; I will repay them,” says the Lord.

Then the Spirit of the Lord entered Samson and gave him great power. Samson went down to the city of Ashkelon and killed thirty of its men and took all that they had and gave the clothes to the men who had answered his riddle. Then he went to his father’s house very angry.

(Samson’s parents did not know that the Lord wanted this to happen because he was looking for a way to challenge the Philistines, who were ruling over Israel at this time.)

The Philistines asked, “Who did this?” Someone told them, “Samson, the son-in-law of the man from Timnah, did because his father-in-law gave his wife to his best man.” So the Philistines burned Samson’s wife and her father to death.

Samson attacked the Philistines and killed many of them. Then he went down and stayed in a cave in the rock of Etam.
