When the Ammonites made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to Jephthah to bring him back from Tob.

The Ammonites knew that they had insulted David. So they hired twenty thousand Aramean foot soldiers from Beth Rehob and Zobah. They also hired the king of Maacah with a thousand men and twelve thousand men from Tob.

The Ammonites came out and prepared for battle at the city gate. The Arameans from Zobah and Rehob and the men from Tob and Maacah were out in the field by themselves.

The Ammonites then crossed the Jordan River to fight the people of Judah, Benjamin, and Ephraim, causing much trouble to the people of Israel.

After a time the Ammonites fought against Israel.

They said to him, “Come and lead our army so we can fight the Ammonites.”

But some troublemakers said, “How can this man save us?” They disapproved of Saul and refused to bring gifts to him. But Saul kept quiet.

Then the people said to Samuel, “Who didn’t want Saul as king? Bring them here and we will kill them!”
