When the Israelites came out of Egypt, they went into the desert to the Red Sea and then to Kadesh.

Then they turned back and went to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh). They defeated all the Amalekites, as well as the Amorites who lived in Hazazon Tamar.

They came back to Moses and Aaron and all the Israelites at Kadesh, in the Desert of Paran. The men reported to them and showed everybody the fruit from the land.

Since the Amalekites and the Canaanites are living in the valleys, leave tomorrow and follow the desert road toward the Red Sea.”

In the first month all the people of Israel arrived at the Desert of Zin, and they stayed at Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried.

Why did you bring the Lord’s people into this desert? Are we and our animals to die here?

But you must turn around and follow the desert road toward the Red Sea.”

So you stayed in Kadesh a long time.

The Israelites had moved about in the desert for forty years. During that time all the fighting men who had left Egypt had died because they had not obeyed the Lord. So the Lord swore they would not see the land he had promised their ancestors to give them, a fertile land.

They said: “This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not take the land of the people of Moab or Ammon.
