He told his relatives to gather rocks, so they took the rocks and piled them up; then they ate beside the pile.

So Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord. And he got up early the next morning and built an altar near the bottom of the mountain. He set up twelve stones, one stone for each of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Soon you will cross the Jordan River to go into the land the Lord your God is giving you. On that day set up some large stones and cover them with plaster.

The people of Reuben, Gad, and East Manasseh went to Geliloth, near the Jordan River in the land of Canaan. There they built a beautiful altar.

So Joshua chose one man from each tribe. Then he called the twelve men together

They will be a sign among you. In the future your children will ask you, ‘What do these rocks mean?’
