“Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe.

He took twelve stones, one stone for each of the twelve tribes, the number of Jacob’s sons. (The Lord changed Jacob’s name to Israel.)

“Send men to explore the land of Canaan, which I will give to the Israelites. Send one leader from each tribe.”

Also take one leader from each tribe to help divide the land.

I thought that was a good idea, so I chose twelve of your men, one for each tribe.

Now choose twelve men from among you, one from each of the twelve tribes of Israel.
