Father, you are the One who is good. The world does not know you, but I know you, and these people know you sent me.

And this is eternal life: that people know you, the only true God, and that they know Jesus Christ, the One you sent.

One night Nicodemus came to Jesus and said, “Teacher, we know you are a teacher sent from God, because no one can do the miracles you do unless God is with him.”

Whoever accepts what he says has proven that God is true.

But there is another who tells about me, and I know that the things he says about me are true.

I have come from my Father and speak for him, but you don’t accept me. But when another person comes, speaking only for himself, you will accept him.

They said, “This is Jesus, the son of Joseph. We know his father and mother. How can he say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”

When the feast was about half over, Jesus went to the Temple and began to teach.

Jesus answered, “Yes, I am saying these things about myself, but they are true. I know where I came from and where I am going. But you don’t know where I came from or where I am going.

But when I do judge, I judge truthfully, because I am not alone. The Father who sent me is with me.

They asked, “Where is your father?” Jesus answered, “You don’t know me or my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father, too.”

I have many things to say and decide about you. But I tell people only the things I have heard from the One who sent me, and he speaks the truth.”

Jesus said to them, “If God were really your Father, you would love me, because I came from God and now I am here. I did not come by my own authority; God sent me.

We know that God spoke to Moses, but we don’t even know where this man comes from.”

As I was going through your city, I saw the objects you worship. I found an altar that had these words written on it: to a god who is not known. You worship a god that you don’t know, and this is the God I am telling you about!

People did not think it was important to have a true knowledge of God. So God left them and allowed them to have their own worthless thinking and to do things they should not do.

No! God will continue to be true even when every person is false. As the Scriptures say: “So you will be shown to be right when you speak, and you will win your case.”

But since you can believe God, you can believe that what we tell you is never both yes and no.

God once said, “Let the light shine out of the darkness!” This is the same God who made his light shine in our hearts by letting us know the glory of God that is in the face of Christ.

That faith and that knowledge come from the hope for life forever, which God promised to us before time began. And God cannot lie.

These two things cannot change: God cannot lie when he makes a promise, and he cannot lie when he makes an oath. These things encourage us who came to God for safety. They give us strength to hold on to the hope we have been given.

Anyone who believes in the Son of God has the truth that God told us. Anyone who does not believe makes God a liar, because that person does not believe what God told us about his Son.

Now Eli’s sons were evil men; they did not care about the Lord.
