Let’s go early to the vineyards and see if the buds are on the vines. Let’s see if the blossoms have already opened and if the pomegranates have bloomed. There I will give you my love.

At that time the Lord’s branch will be very beautiful and great. The people still living in Israel will be proud of what the land grows.

All of your people will do what is right. They will receive the earth forever. They are the plant I have planted, the work of my own hands to show my greatness.

and to help the sorrowing people of Jerusalem. I will give them a crown to replace their ashes, and the oil of gladness to replace their sorrow, and clothes of praise to replace their spirit of sadness. Then they will be called Trees of Goodness, trees planted by the Lord to show his greatness.

Many shepherds have ruined my vineyards and trampled the plants in my field. They have turned my beautiful field into an empty desert.

But I planted you as a special vine, as a very good seed. How then did you turn into a wild vine that grows bad fruit?

“ ‘Your mother was like a vine in your vineyard, planted beside the water. The vine had many branches and gave much fruit, because there was plenty of water.

Israel is like a large vine that produced plenty of fruit. As the people became richer, they built more altars for idols. As their land became better, they put up better stone pillars to honor gods.

“ ‘Listen, Joshua, the high priest, and your friends who are sitting in front of you. They are symbols of what will happen. I am going to bring my servant called the Branch.

Jesus answered, “Every plant that my Father in heaven has not planted himself will be pulled up by the roots.

“The kingdom of heaven is like a person who owned some land. One morning, he went out very early to hire some people to work in his vineyard.

“Listen to this story: There was a man who owned a vineyard. He put a wall around it and dug a hole for a winepress and built a tower. Then he leased the land to some farmers and left for a trip.

Jesus told this story: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard. He came looking for some fruit on the tree, but he found none.

The law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

The true Light that gives light to all was coming into the world!

He cuts off every branch of mine that does not produce fruit. And he trims and cleans every branch that produces fruit so that it will produce even more fruit.

Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, it was not Moses who gave you bread from heaven; it is my Father who is giving you the true bread from heaven.

My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.

It is as if some of the branches from an olive tree have been broken off. You non-Jewish people are like the branch of a wild olive tree that has been joined to that first tree. You now share the strength and life of the first tree, the Jews.

We are God’s workers, working together; you are like God’s farm, God’s house.

But also I am writing a new command to you, and you can see its truth in Jesus and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.
