This was to bring about what Isaiah the prophet had said: “Lord, who believed what we told them? Who saw the Lord’s power in this?”

King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz prayed to heaven about this.

It wasn’t their swords that took the land. It wasn’t their power that gave them victory. But it was your great power and strength. You were with them because you loved them.

I will soon show that I do what is right. I will soon save you. I will use my power and judge all nations. All the faraway places are waiting for me; they wait for my power to help them.

Wake up, wake up, and use your strength, powerful Lord. Wake up as you did in the old times, as you did a long time ago. With your own power, you cut Rahab into pieces and killed that sea monster.

Who would have believed what we heard? Who saw the Lord’s power in this?

You are hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he said about you:

Jesus answered, “You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah, because no person taught you that. My Father in heaven showed you who I am.

When the soldiers had crucified him, they threw lots to decide who would get his clothes.

Though Jesus had done many miracles in front of the people, they still did not believe in him.

This is why the people could not believe: Isaiah also had said,

But this happened so that what is written in their law would be true: ‘They hated me for no reason.’

While I was with them, I kept them safe by the power of your name, the name you gave me. I protected them, and only one of them, the one worthy of destruction, was lost so that the Scripture would come true.

So the soldiers said to each other, “We should not tear this into parts. Let’s throw lots to see who will get it.” This happened so that this Scripture would come true: “They divided my clothes among them, and they threw lots for my clothing.” So the soldiers did this.

But not all the Jews accepted the good news. Isaiah said, “Lord, who believed what we told them?”

Then Isaiah is bold enough to say: “I was found by those who were not asking me for help. I made myself known to people who were not looking for me.”

But Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God to those people God has called—Jews and Greeks.

and showed his son to me so that I might tell the Good News about him to those who are not Jewish. When God called me, I did not get advice or help from any person.
