Jesus meant that Lazarus was dead, but his followers thought he meant Lazarus was really sleeping.
Jesus said, “Go away. The girl is not dead, only asleep.” But the people laughed at him.
All the people were crying and feeling sad because the girl was dead, but Jesus said, “Stop crying. She is not dead, only asleep.”
After Jesus said this, he added, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him.”
The followers said, “But Lord, if he is only asleep, he will be all right.”
So then Jesus said plainly, “Lazarus is dead.
