Announce this among the nations: Prepare for war! Wake up the soldiers! Let all the men of war come near and attack.

Tell the nations, “The Lord is king.” The earth is set, and it cannot be moved. He will judge the people fairly.

All you nations, come near and listen. Pay attention, you peoples! The earth and all the people in it should listen, the world and everything in it.

“Nations, listen to the message from the Lord. Tell this message in the faraway lands by the sea: ‘The one who scattered the people of Israel will bring them back, and he will watch over his people like a shepherd.’

“Announce this to the nations. Lift up a banner and tell them. Speak the whole message and say: ‘Babylon will be captured. The god Bel will be put to shame, and the god Marduk will be afraid. Babylon’s gods will be put to shame, and her idols will be afraid!’

“Sharpen the arrows! Pick up your shields! The Lord has stirred up the kings of the Medes, because he wants to destroy Babylon. The Lord will punish them as they deserve for destroying his Temple.

“Lift up a banner in the land! Blow the trumpet among the nations! Get the nations ready for battle against Babylon. Call these kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz to fight against her. Choose a commander to lead the army against Babylon. Send so many horses that they are like a swarm of locusts.

They say, “Get ready to fight against Jerusalem! Get up! We will attack at noon! But it is already getting late; the evening shadows are growing long.

“ ‘This is what the Lord God says: You are the one about whom I spoke in past days. I spoke through my servants, the prophets of Israel, who prophesied for many years that I would bring you against them.

“ ‘Be prepared. Be prepared, you and all the armies that have come together to make you their commander.

The Lord says this about the prophets who teach his people the wrong way of living: “If these prophets are given food to eat, they shout, ‘Peace!’ But if someone doesn’t give them what they ask for, they call for a holy war against that person.

I will shake all the nations, and they will bring their wealth. Then I will fill this Temple with glory,’ says the Lord All-Powerful.

I will bring all the nations together to fight Jerusalem. They will capture the city and rob the houses and attack the women. Half the people will be taken away as captives, but the rest of the people won’t be taken from the city.

Then the Lord will go to war against those nations; he will fight as in a day of battle.
