In the grave the wicked stop making trouble, and the weary workers are at rest.

“I wish you would hide me in the grave; hide me until your anger is gone. I wish you would set a time and then remember me!

Will hope go down to the gates of death? Will we go down together into the dust?”

Why was I not buried like a child born dead, like a baby who never saw the light of day?

In the grave there is rest for the captives who no longer hear the shout of the slave driver.

I decided that the dead are better off than the living.

After people are dead, they can no longer love or hate or envy. They will never again share in what happens here on earth.

Don’t be afraid of people, who can kill the body but cannot kill the soul. The only one you should fear is the one who can destroy the soul and the body in hell.

“I tell you, my friends, don’t be afraid of people who can kill the body but after that can do nothing more to hurt you.

Let us try as hard as we can to enter God’s rest so that no one will fail by following the example of those who refused to obey.

This shows that the rest for God’s people is still coming.

(Lot was a good man, but because he lived with evil people every day, his good heart was hurt by the evil things he saw and heard.)

Then I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die from now on in the Lord.” The Spirit says, “Yes, they will rest from their hard work, and the reward of all they have done stays with them.”

The Lord will hand over both Israel and you to the Philistines. Tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The Lord will hand over the army of Israel to the Philistines.”
