So Abimelech warned everyone, “Anyone who touches this man or his wife will be put to death.”

The Lord said to Satan, “All right, then. Everything Job has is in your power, but you must not touch Job himself.” Then Satan left the Lord’s presence.

He said: “I was naked when I was born, and I will be naked when I die. The Lord gave these things to me, and he has taken them away. Praise the name of the Lord.”

After a feast was over, Job would send and have them made clean. Early in the morning Job would offer a burnt offering for each of them, because he thought, “My children may have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” Job did this every time.

Pity me, my friends, pity me, because the hand of God has hit me.

Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job? No one else on earth is like him. He is an honest and innocent man, honoring God and staying away from evil. You caused me to ruin him for no good reason, but he continues to be without blame.”

But reach out your hand and destroy his flesh and bones, and he will curse you to your face.”

The Lord said to Satan, “All right, then. Job is in your power, but you may not take his life.”

So Satan left the Lord’s presence. He put painful sores on Job’s body, from the top of his head to the soles of his feet.

Job’s wife said to him, “Why are you trying to stay innocent? Curse God and die!”

But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged; trouble hits you, and you are terrified.

He said, “Don’t touch my chosen people, and don’t harm my prophets.”

So the Lord has become very angry with his people, and he has raised his hand to punish them. Even the mountains are frightened. Dead bodies lie in the streets like garbage. But the Lord is still angry; his hand is still raised to strike down the people.

Right in front of me they continue to do things that make me angry. They offer sacrifices to their gods in their gardens, and they burn incense on altars of brick.

People will wander through the land troubled and hungry. When they become hungry, they will become angry and will look up and curse their king and their God.

This is what the Lord All-Powerful says: “After he has honored me and sent me against the nations who took your possessions—because whoever touches you hurts what is precious to me—

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven saying: “The salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have now come. The accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accused them day and night before our God, has been thrown down.

They also cursed the God of heaven because of their pain and the sores they had, but they refused to change their hearts and turn away from the evil things they did.

Giant hailstones, each weighing about a hundred pounds, fell from the sky upon people. People cursed God for the disaster of the hail, because this disaster was so terrible.

They were burned by the great heat, and they cursed the name of God, who had control over these disasters. But the people refused to change their hearts and lives and give glory to God.
