A man named Job lived in the land of Uz. He was an honest and innocent man; he honored God and stayed away from evil.

You should have confidence because you respect God; you should have hope because you are innocent.

“I am innocent, but I don’t care about myself. I hate my own life.

But choose some capable men from among the people—men who respect God, who can be trusted, and who will not change their decisions for money. Make these men officers over the people, to rule over groups of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.

Wise people are careful and stay out of trouble, but fools are careless and quick to act.

People who live good lives respect the Lord, but those who live evil lives don’t.

Good people stay away from evil. By watching what they do, they protect their lives.

Love and truth bring forgiveness of sin. By respecting the Lord you will avoid evil.

The good people who live honest lives will be a blessing to their children.

Don’t depend on your own wisdom. Respect the Lord and refuse to do wrong.

If you respect the Lord, you will also hate evil. I hate pride and bragging, evil ways and lies.

and all the foreigners there; all the kings of the land of Uz; all the kings of the Philistines (the kings of the cities of Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the people left at Ashdod);

Be happy and glad, people of Edom, you who live in the land of Uz. The cup of God’s anger will come to you; then you will get drunk and go naked.

Even if three great men like Noah, Daniel, and Job were in that country, their goodness could save only themselves, says the Lord God.

As surely as I live, says the Lord God, even if Noah, Daniel, and Job were in the land, they could not save their son or daughter. They could save only themselves because they did what was right.

Zechariah and Elizabeth truly did what God said was good. They did everything the Lord commanded and were without fault in keeping his law.

But you must be innocent in the presence of the Lord your God.

We say they are happy because they did not give up. You have heard about Job’s patience, and you know the Lord’s purpose for him in the end. You know the Lord is full of mercy and is kind.

He must stop doing evil and do good. He must look for peace and work for it.
