Your prophets see false visions and prophesy lies. They say, “This is the message of the Lord,” when the Lord has not sent them. But they still hope their words will come true.

Then the Lord said to me, “Those prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I did not send them or appoint them or speak to them. They have been prophesying false visions, idolatries, worthless magic, and their own wishful thinking.

But you people want a false prophet who will tell you nothing but lies. You want one who promises to prophesy good things for you if you give him wine and beer. He’s just the prophet for you.

Will you still be brave and strong when I punish you? I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will act.

How will you explain the things you have done? What will you do when your destruction comes from far away? Where will you run for help? Where will you hide your riches then?

I wish they were wise and understood this; I wish they could see what will happen to them.

The prophets say, “Don’t prophesy to us! Don’t prophesy about these things! Nothing to make us feel bad will happen!”

Your prophets saw visions, but they were false and worth nothing. They did not point out your sins to keep you from being captured. They preached what was false and led you wrongly.

She made herself dirty by her sins and did not think about what would happen to her. Her defeat was surprising, and no one could comfort her. She says, “Lord, see how I suffer, because the enemy has won.”

The sinners in Jerusalem are afraid; those who are separated from God shake with fear. They say, “Can any of us live through this fire that destroys? Who can live near this fire that burns on and on?”

People who live near the sea will say, ‘Look at those countries. We trusted them to help us. We ran to them so they would save us from the king of Assyria. So how will we be able to escape?’ ”

Its judges take money to decide who wins in court. Its priests only teach for pay, and its prophets only look into the future when they get paid. But they lean on the Lord and say, “The Lord is here with us, so nothing bad will happen to us.”

Your first father sinned, and your leaders have turned against me.

You said, ‘I will live forever as the queen.’ But you did not think about these things or consider what would happen.

How much longer will the land stay dried up and the grass in every field be dead? The animals and birds in the land have died, because the people are evil. Yes, they are even saying, “God does not see what happens to us.”

The priests, the prophets, and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the Temple of the Lord.

It happened because her prophets sinned and her priests did evil. They killed in the city those who did what was right.

Our enemies hunted us, so we could not even walk in the streets. Our end is near. Our time is up. Our end has come.

The priests are as wrong as the people, and I will punish them both for what they have done. I will repay them for the wrong they have done.

I have seen horrible things in Israel. Look at Israel’s prostitution; Israel has become unclean.

What will you do then on the day of feasts and on the day of the Lord’s festival?

He said, “I will turn away from them and see what will happen to them. They are evil people, unfaithful children.

Ahab called about four hundred prophets together and asked them, “Should I go to war against Ramoth in Gilead or not?” They answered, “Go, because the Lord will hand them over to you.”

Evil people listen to evil words. Liars pay attention to cruel words.

“ ‘It is because they lead my people the wrong way by saying, “Peace!” when there is no peace. When the people build a weak wall, the prophets cover it with whitewash to make it look strong.

Its prophets are proud; they are people who cannot be trusted. Its priests don’t respect holy things; they break God’s teachings.
