These people did not listen to the Lord. So they all went to Egypt to the city of Tahpanhes.

Then all the people, from the least important to the most important, along with the army leaders, ran away to Egypt, because they were afraid of the Babylonians.

As the prophet spoke, Amaziah said to him, “We never gave you the job of advising the king. Stop, or you will be killed.” The prophet stopped speaking except to say, “I know that God has decided to destroy you because you have done this. You did not listen to my advice.”

They go down to Egypt for help without asking me about it first. They hope they will be saved by the king of Egypt; they want Egypt to protect them.

Your officers have gone to Zoan, and your messengers have gone to Hanes,

The men from the cities of Memphis and Tahpanhes have disgraced you by shaving the top of your head.

Johanan and the other army officers were afraid of the Babylonians. Since the king of Babylon had chosen Gedaliah son of Ahikam to be governor of Judah but Ishmael son of Nethaniah had murdered him, Johanan was afraid that the Babylonians would be angry. So they decided to run away to Egypt. On the way they stayed at Geruth Kimham, near the town of Bethlehem.

So today I have told you, but you have not obeyed the Lord your God in all that he sent me to tell you.

Jeremiah received a message from the Lord for all the Jews living in Egypt—in the cities of Migdol, Tahpanhes, Memphis, and in southern Egypt. This was the message:

Then Jeremiah said to all those men and women, “People of Judah who are now in Egypt, hear the word of the Lord:

“Announce this message in Egypt, and preach it in Migdol. Preach it also in the cities of Memphis and Tahpanhes: ‘Get ready for war, because the battle is all around you.’

In Tahpanhes the day will be dark when I break Egypt’s power. Then she will no longer be proud of her power. A cloud will cover Egypt, and her villages will be captured and taken away.
