Your ancestors didn’t say, ‘Where is the Lord who brought us out of Egypt? He led us through the desert, through a dry and rocky land, through a dark and dangerous land. He led us where no one travels or lives.’

Elisha hit the water with Elijah’s coat and said, “Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” When he hit the water, it divided to the right and to the left, and Elisha crossed over.

Let darkness and gloom have that day. Let a cloud hide it. Let thick darkness cover its light.

But no one asks, ‘Where is God, my Maker, who gives us songs in the night,

Even if I walk through a very dark valley, I will not be afraid, because you are with me. Your rod and your shepherd’s staff comfort me.

I keep thinking about the old days, the years of long ago.

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt where you were slaves.

When they suffered, he suffered also. He sent his own angel to save them. Because of his love and kindness, he saved them. Since long ago he has picked them up and carried them.

No one worships you or even asks you to help us. That is because you have turned away from us and have let our sins destroy us.

Give glory to the Lord your God before he brings darkness and before you slip and fall on the dark hills. You hope for light, but he will turn it into thick darkness; he will change it into deep gloom.

“Go and speak to the people of Jerusalem, saying: This is what the Lord says: ‘I remember how faithful you were to me when you were a young nation. You loved me like a young bride. You followed me through the desert, a land that had never been planted.

The priests didn’t ask, ‘Where is the Lord?’ The people who know the teachings didn’t know me. The leaders turned against me. The prophets prophesied in the name of Baal and worshiped useless idols.

Those people have lied about the Lord and said, “He will not do anything to us! Nothing bad will happen to us! We will never see war or hunger!

Although the people say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives!’ they don’t really mean it.”

Babylon’s towns are ruined and empty. It has become a dry, desert land, a land where no one lives. People do not even travel through Babylon.

Later the Lord used a prophet to bring Jacob’s descendants out of Egypt; he used a prophet to take care of the Israelites.

“I, the Lord, have been your God since you were in the land of Egypt. You should have known no other God except me. I am the only one who saves.

It was I who brought you from the land of Egypt and led you for forty years through the desert so I could give you the land of the Amorites.

These people who live in darkness will see a great light. They live in a place covered with the shadows of death, but a light will shine on them.”

Then, as the Lord our God commanded us, we left Mount Sinai and went toward the mountain country of the Amorite people. We went through that large and terrible desert you saw, and then we came to Kadesh Barnea.

He found them in a desert, a windy, empty land. He surrounded them and brought them up, guarding them as those he loved very much.

Remember how the Lord your God has led you in the desert for these forty years, taking away your pride and testing you, because he wanted to know what was in your heart. He wanted to know if you would obey his commands.

Then Gideon said, “Sir, if the Lord is with us, why are we having so much trouble? Where are the miracles our ancestors told us he did when the Lord brought them out of Egypt? But now he has left us and has handed us over to the Midianites.”
