The important men send their servants to get water. They go to the wells, but they find no water. So they return with empty jars. They are ashamed and embarrassed and cover their heads in shame.

David went up the Mount of Olives, crying as he went. He covered his head and went barefoot. All the people with David covered their heads also and cried as they went.

The king covered his face and cried loudly, “My son Absalom! Absalom, my son, my son!”

After a while the stream dried up because there was no rain.

“Don’t listen to Hezekiah. The king of Assyria says, ‘Make peace with me, and come out of the city to me. Then everyone will be free to eat the fruit from his own grapevine and fig tree and to drink water from his own well.

Then Mordecai returned to the king’s gate, but Haman hurried home with his head covered, because he was embarrassed and ashamed.

They are upset because they had been sure; when they arrive, they are disappointed.

Let those who accuse me be disgraced and covered with shame like a coat.

People are trying to kill me. Shame them and disgrace them. People want to hurt me. Let them run away in disgrace.

The ground is dry and cracked open, because no rain falls on the land. The farmers are upset and sad, so they cover their heads in shame.

I don’t understand why my pain has no end. I don’t understand why my injury is not cured or healed. Will you be like a brook that goes dry? Will you be like a spring that stops flowing?

“My people have done two evils: They have turned away from me, the spring of living water. And they have dug their own wells, which are broken wells that cannot hold water.

You will eventually leave that place with your hands on your head, like captives. You trusted those countries, but you will not be helped by them, because the Lord has rejected them.

But the Lord is with me like a strong warrior, so those who are chasing me will trip and fall; they will not defeat me. They will be ashamed because they have failed, and their shame will never be forgotten.

So the rain has not come, and there have not been any spring rains. But your face still looks like the face of a prostitute. You refuse even to be ashamed of what you did.

The babies are so thirsty their tongues stick to the roofs of their mouths. Children beg for bread, but no one gives them any.

If she refuses, I will strip her naked and leave her bare like the day she was born. I will make her dry like a desert, like a land without water, and I will kill her with thirst.

Wild animals also need your help. The streams of water have dried up, and fire has burned up the open pastures.

“I held back the rain from you three months before harvest time. Then I let it rain on one city but not on another. Rain fell on one field, but another field got none and dried up.

People weak from thirst went from town to town for water, but they could not get enough to drink. Still you did not come back to me,” says the Lord.

Anyone from the nations who does not go to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord All-Powerful, will not have rain fall on his land.
