Lord, when I bring my case to you, you are always right. But I want to ask you about the justice you give. Why are evil people successful? Why do dishonest people have such easy lives?

Surely you will not destroy the good people along with the evil ones; then they would be treated the same. You are the judge of all the earth. Won’t you do what is right?”

Lord, God of Israel, by your goodness a few of us are left alive today. We admit that we are guilty and none of us should be allowed to stand before you.”

You have been fair in everything that has happened to us; you have been loyal, but we have been wicked.

The tents of robbers are not bothered, and those who make God angry are safe. They have their god in their pocket.

But I want to speak to the Almighty and to argue my case with God.

Dying people groan in the city, and the injured cry out for help, but God accuses no one of doing wrong.

God may let these evil people feel safe, but he is watching their ways.

They wrap their roots around a pile of rocks and look for a place among the stones.

The Lord is kind and does what is right; our God is merciful.

Lord, you do what is right, and your laws are fair.

Lord, I know that your laws are right and that it was right for you to punish me.

Everything the Lord does is right. He is loyal to all he has made.

Don’t be upset because of evil people. Don’t be jealous of those who do wrong,

I saw a wicked and cruel man who looked strong like a healthy tree in good soil.

You are the only one I have sinned against; I have done what you say is wrong. You are right when you speak and fair when you judge.

You want me to be completely truthful, so teach me wisdom.

Wicked people grow like the grass. Evil people seem to do well, but they will be destroyed forever.

Fools will die because they refuse to listen; they will be destroyed because they do not care.

Sometimes something useless happens on earth. Bad things happen to good people, and good things happen to bad people. I say that this is also useless.

The Lord says, “Present your case.” The King of Jacob says, “Tell me your arguments.

But you have not heard me; you have not understood. Even long ago you did not listen to me. I knew you would surely turn against me; you have fought against me since you were born.

But, Lord All-Powerful, you are a fair judge. You know how to test peoples’ hearts and minds. I have told you what I have against them. So let me see you give them the punishment they deserve.

Even your own brothers and members of your own family are making plans against you. They are crying out against you. Don’t trust them, even when they say nice things to you!

But like a woman who is unfaithful to her husband, family of Israel, you have been unfaithful to me,” says the Lord.

I said to myself, ‘Israel will come back to me after she does this evil,’ but she didn’t come back. And Israel’s wicked sister Judah saw what she did.

“After I gave the record of ownership to Baruch son of Neriah, I prayed to the Lord,

The families of Israel and Judah have been completely unfaithful to me,” says the Lord.

I wish I had a place in the desert— a house where travelers spend the night— so I could leave my people. I could go away from them, because they are all unfaithful to God; they are all turning against him.

Jerusalem says, “The Lord is right, but I refused to obey him. Listen, all you people, and look at my pain. My young women and men have gone into captivity.

“But you say, ‘What the Lord does isn’t fair.’ Listen, people of Israel. I am fair. It is what you do that is not fair!

The Lord was ready to bring the disaster on us, and he did it because the Lord our God is right in everything he does. But we still did not obey him.

“Lord, you are good and right, but we are full of shame today—the people of Judah and Jerusalem, all the people of Israel, those near and far whom you scattered among many nations because they were not loyal to you.

But they have broken the agreement as Adam did; they have been unfaithful to me.

So the teachings are weak, and justice never comes. Evil people gain while good people lose; the judges no longer make fair decisions.

But the Lord is good, and he is there in that city. He does no wrong. Every morning he governs the people fairly; every day he can be trusted. But evil people are not ashamed of what they do.

You have tired the Lord with your words. You ask, “How have we tired him?” You did it by saying, “The Lord thinks anyone who does evil is good, and he is pleased with them.” Or you asked, “Where is the God who is fair?”

So we say that proud people are happy. Evil people succeed. They challenge God and get away with it.’ ”

He is like a rock; what he does is perfect, and he is always fair. He is a faithful God who does no wrong, who is right and fair.
