So God said to him, “You did not ask for a long life, or riches for yourself, or the death of your enemies. Since you asked for wisdom to make the right decisions,

God does not answer evil people when they cry out, because the wicked are proud.

They called for help, but no one came to save them. They called to the Lord, but he did not answer them.

“Then you will call to me, but I will not answer. You will look for me, but you will not find me.

The Lord hates the sacrifice that the wicked offer, but he likes the prayers of honest people.

Whoever ignores the poor when they cry for help will also cry for help and not be answered.

The Lord hates sacrifices brought by evil people, particularly when they offer them for the wrong reasons.

So this is what the Lord says: ‘I will soon bring a disaster on the people of Judah which they will not be able to escape. They will cry to me for help, but I will not listen to them.

“As for you, Jeremiah, don’t pray for these people or cry out for them or ask anything for them. I will not listen when they call to me in the time of their trouble.

Even if they fast, I will not listen to their prayers. Even if they offer burnt offerings and grain offerings to me, I will not accept them. Instead, I will destroy the people of Judah with war, hunger, and terrible diseases.”

They will cry to the Lord, but he won’t answer them. At that time he will hide his face from them, because what they have done is evil.”

“ ‘When I called to them, they would not listen. So when they called to me, I would not listen,’ says the Lord All-Powerful.

But Jesus said, “You don’t understand what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am about to drink?” The sons answered, “Yes, we can.”

Jesus said, “You don’t understand what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I must drink? And can you be baptized with the same kind of baptism that I must go through?”

Yes, everyone who asks will receive. The one who searches will find. And everyone who knocks will have the door opened.

Then the younger son gathered up all that was his and traveled far away to another country. There he wasted his money in foolish living.

But your other son, who wasted all your money on prostitutes, comes home, and you kill the fat calf for him!’

Do you know where your fights and arguments come from? They come from the selfish desires that war within you.

And God gives us what we ask for because we obey God’s commands and do what pleases him.

And this is the boldness we have in God’s presence: that if we ask God for anything that agrees with what he wants, he hears us.
