Listen, my dear brothers and sisters! God chose the poor in the world to be rich with faith and to receive the kingdom God promised to those who love him.

“They are blessed who realize their spiritual poverty, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.

Jesus looked at his followers and said, “You people who are poor are blessed, because the kingdom of God belongs to you.

I know your troubles and that you are poor, but really you are rich! I know the bad things some people say about you. They say they are Jews, but they are not true Jews. They are a synagogue that belongs to Satan.

You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. You know that Christ was rich, but for you he became poor so that by his becoming poor you might become rich.

“This is how it will be for those who store up things for themselves and are not rich toward God.”

Now we hope for the blessings God has for his children. These blessings, which cannot be destroyed or be spoiled or lose their beauty, are kept in heaven for you.

When people are tempted and still continue strong, they should be happy. After they have proved their faith, God will reward them with life forever. God promised this to all those who love him.

He thought it was better to suffer for the Christ than to have all the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking for God’s reward.

“Don’t fear, little flock, because your Father wants to give you the kingdom.

But as it is written in the Scriptures: “No one has ever seen this, and no one has ever heard about it. No one has ever imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.”

“Then the King will say to the people on his right, ‘Come, my Father has given you his blessing. Receive the kingdom God has prepared for you since the world was made.

Those who win the victory will receive this, and I will be their God, and they will be my children.

Believers who are poor should take pride that God has made them spiritually rich.

Now, a crown is being held for me—a crown for being right with God. The Lord, the judge who judges rightly, will give the crown to me on that day—not only to me but to all those who have waited with love for him to come again.

We have much sadness, but we are always rejoicing. We are poor, but we are making many people rich in faith. We have nothing, but really we have everything.

I advise you to buy from me gold made pure in fire so you can be truly rich. Buy from me white clothes so you can be clothed and so you can cover your shameful nakedness. Buy from me medicine to put on your eyes so you can truly see.

Tell the rich people to do good, to be rich in doing good deeds, to be generous and ready to share.

But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember when you were alive you had the good things in life, but bad things happened to Lazarus. Now he is comforted here, and you are suffering.

The blind can see, the crippled can walk, and people with skin diseases are healed. The deaf can hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is preached to the poor.

“So the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I promised that your family and your ancestor’s family would serve me always.’ But now the Lord says: ‘This must stop! I will honor those who honor me, but I will dishonor those who ignore me.

And you will be given a very great welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The Lord will save me when anyone tries to hurt me, and he will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. Glory forever and ever be the Lord’s. Amen.

This is proof that God is right in his judgment. He wants you to be counted worthy of his kingdom for which you are suffering.

I am the least important of all God’s people, but God gave me this gift—to tell those who are not Jews the Good News about the riches of Christ, which are too great to understand fully.

If we are God’s children, we will receive blessings from God together with Christ. But we must suffer as Christ suffered so that we will have glory as Christ has glory.

Later, Lazarus died, and the angels carried him to the arms of Abraham. The rich man died, too, and was buried.

So I fed the flock about to be killed, particularly the weakest ones. Then I took two sticks; I called one Pleasant and the other Union, and I fed the flock.

The Lord will make the poor people happy; they will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

What shall we tell the messengers from Philistia? Say that the Lord has made Jerusalem strong and that his poor people will go there for safety.

He is not nicer to princes than other people, nor kinder to rich people than poor people, because he made them all with his own hands.

“So listen to me, you who can understand. God can never do wrong! It is impossible for the Almighty to do evil.

But I show kindness to thousands who love me and obey my commands.

My dear brothers and sisters, do not be fooled about this.

We encouraged you, we urged you, and we insisted that you live good lives for God, who calls you to his glorious kingdom.

I pray also that you will have greater understanding in your heart so you will know the hope to which he has called us and that you will know how rich and glorious are the blessings God has promised his holy people.

All these things are for you. And so the grace of God that is being given to more and more people will bring increasing thanks to God for his glory.

Have any of the leaders or the Pharisees believed in him? No!

Just as my Father has given me a kingdom, I also give you a kingdom

After Jesus called the crowd to him again, he said, “Every person should listen to me and understand what I am saying.

That day it was broken. The weak ones in the flock who were watching me knew this message was from the Lord.

But I will leave in the city the humble and those who are not proud, and they will trust in the Lord.

“Now, my children, listen to me, because those who follow my ways are happy.

Now, my sons, listen to me; pay attention to what I say.

At dawn the earth changes like clay being pressed by a seal; the hills and valleys stand out like folds in a coat.

Micaiah said, “Ahab, if you come back safely from battle, the Lord has not spoken through me. Remember my words, all you people!”

Stephen answered, “Brothers and fathers, listen to me. Our glorious God appeared to Abraham, our ancestor, in Mesopotamia before he lived in Haran.

When Jotham heard this, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim. He shouted to the people: “Listen to me, you leaders of Shechem, so that God will listen to you!

The Lord raises the poor up from the dust, and he lifts the needy from the ashes. He lets the poor sit with princes and receive a throne of honor. “The foundations of the earth belong to the Lord, and the Lord set the world upon them.

Some people pretend to be rich but really have nothing. Others pretend to be poor but really are wealthy.

My dear brothers and sisters, always be willing to listen and slow to speak. Do not become angry easily,
