People on earth did what God said was evil, and violence was everywhere.

Yet my hands have never done anything cruel, and my prayer is pure.

Destruction is everywhere in the city; trouble and lying never leave its streets.

No, in your heart you plan evil; you think up violent crimes in the land.

The Lord said, “How terrible it will be for these stubborn children. They make plans, but they don’t ask me to help them. They make agreements with other nations, without asking my Spirit. They are adding more and more sins to themselves.

The vineyard belonging to the Lord All-Powerful is the nation of Israel; the garden that he loves is the people of Judah. He looked for justice, but there was only killing. He hoped for right living, but there were only cries of pain.

I will tell about your ‘goodness’ and what you do, and those things will do you no good.

On these special days when you fast, you argue and fight and hit each other with your fists. You cannot do these things as you do now and believe your prayers are heard in heaven.

All of us are dirty with sin. All the right things we have done are like filthy pieces of cloth. All of us are like dead leaves, and our sins, like the wind, have carried us away.

Jerusalem pours out her evil as a well pours out its water. The sounds of violence and destruction are heard within her. I can see the sickness and hurts of Jerusalem.

He mistreats the poor and needy. He steals and refuses to return what was promised for a loan. He looks to idols for help. He does things which I hate.

Violence has grown into a weapon for punishing wickedness. None of the people will be left—none of that crowd, none of their wealth, and nothing of value.

“Make chains for captives, because the land is full of bloody crimes and the city is full of violence.

Then he said to me, “The sin of the people of Israel and Judah is very great. The land is filled with people who murder, and the city is full of people who are not fair. The people say, ‘The Lord has left the land, and the Lord does not see.’

“The people don’t know how to do what is right,” says the Lord. “Their strong buildings are filled with treasures they took by force from others.”

You put off the day of punishment, but you bring near the day when you can do evil to others.

But you are fighting against my people like an enemy. You take the coats from people who pass by; you rob them of their safety; you plan war.

The rich people of the city do cruel things. Its people tell lies; they do not tell the truth.

On that day I will punish those who worship Dagon, those who hurt others and tell lies in the temples of their gods.

How terrible for the wicked, stubborn city of Jerusalem, which hurts its own people.

The Lord God of Israel says, “I hate divorce. And I hate people who do cruel things as easily as they put on clothes,” says the Lord All-Powerful. So be careful. And do not break your trust.
