Isaiah 51:22

New Century Version

Your God will defend his people. This is what the Lord your God says: “The punishment I gave you is like a cup of wine. You drank it and could not walk straight. But I am taking that cup of my anger away from you, and you will never be punished by my anger again.

Lord, battle with those who battle with me. Fight against those who fight against me.

You have given your people trouble. You made us unable to walk straight, like people drunk with wine.

The Lord will defend them in court and will take the life of those who take away their rights.

Be surprised and amazed. Blind yourselves so that you cannot see. Become drunk, but not from wine. Trip and fall, but not from beer.

Children treat my people cruelly, and women rule over them. My people, your guides lead you in the wrong way and turn you away from what is right.

The Lord takes his place in court and stands to judge the people.

This is what the Lord says: “The prisoners will be taken from the strong soldiers. What the soldiers have taken will be saved. I will fight your enemies, and I will save your children.

Awake! Awake! Get up, Jerusalem. The Lord was very angry with you; your punishment was like wine in a cup. The Lord made you drink that wine; you drank the whole cup until you stumbled.

The Lord has made a promise, and by his power he will keep his promise. He said, “I will never again give your grain as food to your enemies. I will not let your enemies drink the new wine that you have worked to make.

The Lord, the God of Israel, said this to me: “My anger is like the wine in a cup. Take it from my hand and make all the nations, to whom I am sending you, drink all of my anger from this cup.

But God is strong and will buy them back. His name is the Lord All-Powerful. He will surely defend them with power so he can give rest to their land. But he will not give rest to those living in Babylon.”

So this is what the Lord says: “I will soon defend you, Judah, and make sure that Babylon is punished. I will dry up Babylon’s sea and make her springs become dry.

The Lord filled me with misery; he made me drunk with suffering.

Lord, you have taken my case and given me back my life.

I will not turn away from them anymore, because I will put my Spirit into the people of Israel, says the Lord God.”

I will gather all the nations together and bring them down into the Valley Where the Lord Judges. There I will judge them, because those nations scattered my own people Israel and forced them to live in other nations. They divided up my land

Because you drank in my Temple, all the nations will drink on and on. They will drink and drink until they disappear.

I sinned against the Lord, so he was angry with me, but he will defend my case in court. He will bring about what is right for me. Then he will bring me out into the light, and I will see him set things right.

“I will make Jerusalem like a cup of poison to the nations around her. They will come and attack Jerusalem and Judah.

But Jesus said, “You don’t understand what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am about to drink?” The sons answered, “Yes, we can.”
