Isaiah 41:17

“The poor and needy people look for water, but they can’t find any. Their tongues are dry with thirst. But I, the Lord, will answer their prayers; I, the God of Israel, will not leave them to die.

I am with you and will protect you everywhere you go and will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

Then the Lord spoke his word to Elijah,

Now, Lord, God of Israel, please continue to keep that promise you made to your servant.

My strength has dried up like a clay pot, and my tongue sticks to the top of my mouth. You laid me in the dust of death.

This poor man called, and the Lord heard him and saved him from all his troubles.

I was young, and now I am old, but I have never seen good people left helpless or their children begging for food.

I thirst for the living God. When can I go to meet with him?

Call to me in times of trouble. I will save you, and you will honor me.”

Do not let your suffering people be disgraced. Let the poor and helpless praise you.

The Lord won’t leave his people nor give up his children.

But the people were very thirsty for water, so they grumbled against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt? Was it to kill us, our children, and our farm animals with thirst?”

I will stand in front of you on a rock at Mount Sinai. Hit that rock with the stick, and water will come out of it so that the people can drink.” Moses did these things as the elders of Israel watched.

You people who live on Mount Zion in Jerusalem will not cry anymore. The Lord will hear your crying, and he will comfort you. When he hears you, he will help you.

Then I will lead the blind along a way they never knew; I will guide them along paths they have not known. I will make the darkness become light for them, and the rough ground smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not leave my people.

Even the wild animals will be thankful to me— the wild dogs and owls. They will honor me when I put water in the desert and rivers in the dry land to give water to my people, the ones I chose.

I will pour out water for the thirsty land and make streams flow on dry land. I will pour out my Spirit into your children and my blessing on your descendants.

They did not become thirsty when he led them through the deserts. He made water flow from a rock for them. He split the rock, and water flowed out.

They will not be hungry or thirsty. Neither the hot sun nor the desert wind will hurt them. The God who comforts them will lead them and guide them by springs of water.

The Lord says, “All you who are thirsty, come and drink. Those of you who do not have money, come, buy and eat! Come buy wine and milk without money and without cost.

The Lord will always lead you. He will satisfy your needs in dry lands and give strength to your bones. You will be like a garden that has much water, like a spring that never runs dry.

The Lord God has put his Spirit in me, because the Lord has appointed me to tell the good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort those whose hearts are broken, to tell the captives they are free, and to tell the prisoners they are released.

His people will be called the Holy People, the Saved People of the Lord, and Jerusalem will be called the City God Wants, the City God Has Not Rejected.

So this is what the Lord God says: “My servants will eat, but you evil people will be hungry. My servants will drink, but you evil people will be thirsty. My servants will be happy, but you evil people will be shamed.

I will provide for their needs before they ask, and I will help them while they are still asking for help.

My hand made all things. All things are here because I made them,” says the Lord. “These are the people I am pleased with: those who are not proud or stubborn and who fear my word.

I will give rest and strength to those who are weak and tired.”

The babies are so thirsty their tongues stick to the roofs of their mouths. Children beg for bread, but no one gives them any.

The man said to me, “This water will flow toward the eastern areas and go down into the Jordan Valley. When it enters the Dead Sea, it will become fresh.

“They are blessed who realize their spiritual poverty, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.

They are blessed who hunger and thirst after justice, for they will be satisfied.

He called, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me! Send Lazarus to dip his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am suffering in this fire!’

But he said to me, “My grace is enough for you. When you are weak, my power is made perfect in you.” So I am very happy to brag about my weaknesses. Then Christ’s power can live in me.

The One on the throne said to me, “It is finished. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give free water from the spring of the water of life to anyone who is thirsty.

The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” Let the one who hears this say, “Come!” Let whoever is thirsty come; whoever wishes may have the water of life as a free gift.
