Because you rage against me, and because I have heard your proud words, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth. Then I will force you to leave my country the same way you came.’

So don’t be like a horse or donkey, that doesn’t understand. They must be led with bits and reins, or they will not come near you.”

I have not come to attack and destroy this country without an order from the Lord. The Lord himself told me to come to this country and destroy it.’ ”

The field commander said to them, “Tell Hezekiah this: “ ‘The great king, the king of Assyria, says: What can you trust in now?

“Tell Hezekiah king of Judah: Don’t be fooled by the god you trust. Don’t believe him when he says Jerusalem will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.

He will return to his country the same way he came, and he will not enter this city,’ says the Lord.

Listen! I am going to put a spirit in the king of Assyria. He will hear a report that will make him return to his own country, and I will cause him to die by the sword there.’ ”

But I will put hooks in your jaws, and I will make the fish of the Nile stick to your sides. I will pull you up out of your rivers, with all the fish sticking to your sides.

You have not stopped your proud talk against me. I have heard you.

I will turn you around and put hooks in your jaws. And I will bring you out with all your army, horses, and horsemen, all of whom will be dressed in beautiful uniforms. They will be a large army with large and small shields and all having swords.

The Lord God has promised this: “Just as surely as I am a holy God, the time will come when you will be taken away by hooks, and what is left of you with fishhooks.

When Pilate saw that he could do nothing about this and that a riot was starting, he took some water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. Then he said, “I am not guilty of this man’s death. You are the ones who are causing it!”

The crowd listened to Paul until he said this. Then they began shouting, “Get rid of him! He doesn’t deserve to live!”

Saul fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul! Why are you persecuting me?”
