They have thrown the gods of these nations into the fire, but they were only wood and rock statues that people made. So the kings have destroyed them.

The Philistines left their idols behind at Baal Perazim, so David and his men carried them away.

Then he took the calf that the people had made and melted it in the fire. He ground it into powder. Then he threw the powder into the water and forced the Israelites to drink it.

But Assyria’s king doesn’t understand that I am using him; he doesn’t know he is a tool for me. He only wants to destroy other people and to defeat many nations.

They will not trust the altars they have made, nor will they trust what their hands have made, not even the Asherah idols and altars.

Their land is full of idols. The people worship these idols they made with their own hands and shaped with their own fingers.

Those masters are now dead; their ghosts will not rise from death. You punished and destroyed them and erased any memory of them.

You gods are less than nothing; you can’t do anything. Those who worship you should be hated.

Look, all these idols are false. They cannot do anything; they are worth nothing.

The craftsman encourages the goldsmith, and the workman who smooths the metal with a hammer encourages the one who shapes the metal. He says, “This metal work is good.” He nails the statue to a base so it can’t fall over.

But he makes a statue from the wood that is left and calls it his god. He bows down to it and worships it. He prays to it and says, “You are my god. Save me!”

And I will announce my judgments against my people because of their evil in turning away from me. They offered sacrifices to other gods and worshiped idols they had made with their own hands.

“Tell them this message: ‘These gods did not make heaven and earth; they will be destroyed and disappear from heaven and earth.’ ”

Can people make gods for themselves? They will not really be gods!”

Has a nation ever exchanged its gods? (Of course, its gods are not really gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their glorious God for idols worth nothing.

He will take their gods, their metal idols, and their valuable things made of silver and gold back to Egypt. Then he will not bother the king of the North for a few years.

Instead, you have set yourself against the Lord of heaven. You ordered the drinking cups from the Temple of the Lord to be brought to you. Then you and your royal guests, your wives, and your slave women drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone that are not really gods; they cannot see or hear or understand anything. You did not honor God, who has power over your life and everything you do.

The idol is something a craftsman made; it is not God. Israel’s calf-shaped idol will surely be smashed to pieces.

In the past you did not know God. You were slaves to gods that were not real.
