The officers of the city of Zoan are fools; the wise men who advise the king of Egypt give wrong advice. How can you say to him, ‘I am wise’? How can you say, ‘I am from the old family of the kings’?

His wisdom was greater than any wisdom of the East, or any wisdom in Egypt.

So Hiram gave Solomon as much cedar and pine as he wanted.

God leads the wise away as captives and turns judges into fools.

The Lord upsets the plans of nations; he ruins all their plans.

I was senseless and stupid. I acted like an animal toward you.

He did miracles while their ancestors watched, in the fields of Zoan in Egypt.

They forgot the signs he did in Egypt and his wonders in the fields of Zoan.

Stupid people don’t know these things, and fools don’t understand.

The Egyptians put them in piles, and the whole country began to stink.

The frogs will jump all over you, your people, and your officers.’ ”

“I am the most stupid person there is, and I have no understanding.

The officers of Zoan have been fooled; the leaders of Memphis have believed false things. So the leaders of Egypt lead that nation the wrong way.

The Egyptians will be afraid, and I will ruin their plans. They will ask advice from their idols and spirits of the dead, from their mediums and fortune-tellers.”

So I will continue to amaze these people by doing more and more miracles. Their wise men will lose their wisdom; their wise men will not be able to understand.”

Your officers have gone to Zoan, and your messengers have gone to Hanes,

I show that the signs of the lying prophets are false; I make fools of those who do magic. I confuse even the wise; they think they know much, but I make them look foolish.

People are so stupid and know so little. Goldsmiths are made ashamed by their idols, because those statues are only false gods. They have no breath in them.

The shepherds are stupid and don’t ask the Lord for advice. So they do not have success, and all their flocks are scattered and lost.

In their homelands those soldiers called out, ‘The king of Egypt is only a lot of noise. He missed his chance for glory!’ ”

This message is to Edom. This is what the Lord All-Powerful says: “Is there no more wisdom in the town of Teman? Can the wise men of Edom no longer give good advice? Have they lost their wisdom?

These wise teachers refused to listen to the word of the Lord, so they are not really wise at all. They will be ashamed. They will be shocked and trapped.

You became too proud because of your beauty. You ruined your wisdom because of your greatness. I threw you down to the ground. Your example taught a lesson to other kings.

I will make southern Egypt empty and start a fire in Zoan and punish Thebes.

Disaster will come on top of disaster, and rumor will be added to rumor. Then they will try to get a vision from a prophet; the teachings of God from the priest and the advice from the elders will be lost.

All the people who are your friends will force you out of the land. The people who are at peace with you will trick you and defeat you. Those who eat your bread with you now are planning a trap for you, and you will not notice it.”

The Lord says, “On that day I will surely destroy the wise people from Edom, and those with understanding from the mountains of Edom.

They went through the southern area to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak lived. (The city of Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

The Egyptians taught Moses everything they knew, and he was a powerful man in what he said and did.
