The people of Israel have gone deep into sin as the people of Gibeah did. The Lord will remember the evil things they have done, and he will punish their sins.

“Israel, you act like a prostitute, but do not be guilty toward the Lord. Don’t go to Gilgal or go up to Beth Aven. Don’t make promises, saying, ‘As surely as the Lord lives …’

Blow the trumpet in Jerusalem; shout a warning on my holy mountain. Let all the people who live in the land shake with fear, because the Lord’s day of judging is coming; it is near.

“Announce this message in Judah and say it in Jerusalem: ‘Blow the trumpet throughout the country!’ Shout out loud and say, ‘Come together! Let’s all escape to the strong, walled cities!’

Then Samuel left and went to Ramah, but Saul went up to his home in Gibeah.

“Put the trumpet to your lips and give the warning! The enemy swoops down on the Lord’s people like an eagle. The Israelites have broken my agreement and have turned against my teachings.

The army will go over the pass. The soldiers will sleep at Geba. The people of Ramah will be afraid, and the people at Gibeah of Saul will run away.

They came from Ephraim in the mountains of Amalek. Benjamin was among the people who followed you. From the family group of Makir, the commanders came down. And from Zebulun came those who lead.

Blow the trumpet in Jerusalem; call for a day when everyone fasts. Tell everyone to stop work.

The people from Israel are worried about the calf-shaped idol at Beth Aven. The people will cry about it, and the priests will cry about it. They used to shout for joy about its glory,

“Run for your lives, people of Benjamin! Run away from Jerusalem! Blow the war trumpet in the town of Tekoa! Raise the warning flag over the town of Beth Hakkerem! Disaster is coming from the north; terrible destruction is coming to you.

Jeroboam put one golden calf in the city of Bethel and the other in the city of Dan.

So bring seven of his sons to us. Then we will kill them and hang them on stakes in the presence of the Lord at Gibeah, the hometown of Saul, the Lord’s chosen king.” The king said, “I will give them to you.”

So all the elders came together and met Samuel at Ramah.

But Samuel always went back to Ramah, where his home was. There he judged Israel and built an altar to the Lord.

Joshua sent some men from Jericho to Ai, which was near Beth Aven, east of Bethel. He told them, “Go to Ai and spy out the area.” So the men went to spy on Ai.

When a trumpet blows a warning in a city, the people tremble. When trouble comes to a city, the Lord has caused it.
