Israel said, “I am rich! I am someone with power!” All their money will do them no good because of the sins they have done.

They trust in their money and brag about their riches.

“Look what happened to the man who did not depend on God but depended on his money. He grew strong by his evil plans.”

Do not trust in force. Stealing is of no use. Even if you gain more riches, don’t put your trust in them.

The Lord hates dishonest scales, but he is pleased with honest weights.

Some people think they are pure, but they are not really free from evil.

“This is the way of a woman who takes part in adultery: She acts as if she had eaten and washed her face; she says, ‘I haven’t done anything wrong.’

“How can you say to me, ‘I am not guilty. I have not worshiped the Baal idols’? Look at the things you did in the valley. Think about what you have done. You are like a she-camel in mating season that runs from place to place.

but you say, ‘I am innocent. God is not angry with me.’ But I will judge you guilty of lying, because you say, ‘I have not sinned.’

Like cages full of birds, their houses are full of lies. They have become rich and powerful.

Through your great skill in trading, you have made your riches grow. You are too proud because of your riches.

I gave them food, and they became full and satisfied. But then they became too proud and forgot me.

Israel, return to the Lord your God, because your sins have made you fall.

Since the priests live off the sin offerings of the people, they want the people to sin more and more.

“When will the New Moon festival be over so we can sell grain? When will the Sabbath be over so we can bring out wheat to sell? We can charge them more and give them less, and we can change the scales to cheat the people.

The enemy offers sacrifices to his net and burns incense to worship it, because it lets him live like the rich and enjoy the best food.

Their buyers kill them and are not punished. Those who sell them say, ‘Praise the Lord, I am rich.’ Even the shepherds don’t feel sorry for their sheep.

You have tired the Lord with your words. You ask, “How have we tired him?” You did it by saying, “The Lord thinks anyone who does evil is good, and he is pleased with them.” Or you asked, “Where is the God who is fair?”

The Lord says, “You have said terrible things about me. “But you ask, ‘What have we said about you?’

But the man, wanting to show the importance of his question, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

Then I can say to myself, “I have enough good things stored to last for many years. Rest, eat, drink, and enjoy life!” ’

“No servant can serve two masters. The servant will hate one master and love the other, or will follow one master and refuse to follow the other. You cannot serve both God and worldly riches.”

He said to them, “You make yourselves look good in front of people, but God knows what is really in your hearts. What is important to people is hateful in God’s sight.

You might say to yourself, “I am rich because of my own power and strength,”

Command those who are rich with things of this world not to be proud. Tell them to hope in God, not in their uncertain riches. God richly gives us everything to enjoy.

and constant quarrels from those who have evil minds and have lost the truth. They think that serving God is a way to get rich.

You say, ‘I am rich, and I have become wealthy and do not need anything.’ But you do not know that you are really miserable, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.
