“When Israel was a child, I loved him, and I called my son out of Egypt.

They have treated me badly all my life. (Let Israel repeat this.)

‘Every one of you has seen what I did to the people of Egypt. You saw how I carried you out of Egypt, as if on eagle’s wings. And I brought you here to me.

Then say to the king, ‘This is what the Lord says: Israel is my firstborn son.

I told you to let my son go so he may worship me. But you refused to let Israel go, so I will kill your firstborn son.’ ”

Because you are precious to me, because I give you honor and love you, I will give other people in your place; I will give other nations to save your life.

“I have left Israel; I have left my people. I have given the people I love over to their enemies.

“Go and speak to the people of Jerusalem, saying: This is what the Lord says: ‘I remember how faithful you were to me when you were a young nation. You loved me like a young bride. You followed me through the desert, a land that had never been planted.

While you did all your hateful acts and sexual sins, you did not remember when you were young, when you were naked and had no clothes and were left in your blood.

“ ‘When I passed by and saw you kicking about in your blood, I said to you, “Live!”

The same will happen to you, people of Bethel, because you did so much evil. When the sun comes up, the king of Israel will die.

Later the Lord used a prophet to bring Jacob’s descendants out of Egypt; he used a prophet to take care of the Israelites.

“But I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt. I will make you live in tents again as you used to do on worship days.

“I, the Lord, have been your God since you were in the land of Egypt. You should have known no other God except me. I am the only one who saves.

There I will give her back her vineyards, and I will make the Valley of Trouble a door of hope. There she will respond as when she was young, as when she came out of Egypt.”

The Lord said, “I have loved you.” But you ask, “How have you loved us?” The Lord said, “Esau and Jacob were brothers. I loved Jacob,

And Joseph stayed in Egypt until Herod died. This happened to bring about what the Lord had said through the prophet: “I called my son out of Egypt.”

The Lord surely loves his people and takes care of all those who belong to him. They bow down at his feet, and they are taught by him.

The Lord did not care for you and choose you because there were many of you—you are the smallest nation of all.
