“Just as wine can trick a person, those who are too proud will not last, because their desire is like a grave’s desire for death, and like death they always want more. They gather other nations for themselves and collect for themselves all the countries.

You have defeated Edom, but you have become proud. Stay at home and brag. Don’t ask for trouble, or you and Judah will be defeated.”

Though the Lord is supreme, he takes care of those who are humble, but he stays away from the proud.

Wine and beer make people loud and uncontrolled; it is not wise to get drunk on them.

People who act with stubborn pride are called “proud,” “bragger,” and “mocker.”

People will never stop dying and being destroyed, and they will never stop wanting more than they have.

Whoever loves money will never have enough money; Whoever loves wealth will not be satisfied with it. This is also useless.

The king of Babylon struck people in anger again and again. He ruled nations in anger and continued to hurt them.

We have heard that the people of Moab are proud and very conceited. They are very proud and angry, but their bragging means nothing.

At that time proud people will be made humble, and they will bow low with shame. At that time only the Lord will be praised,

They set the table; they spread the rugs; they eat and drink. Leaders, stand up. Prepare the shields for battle!

So the place of the dead wants more and more people, and it opens wide its mouth. Jerusalem’s important people and common people will go down into it, with their happy and noisy ones.

How terrible it will be for you who add more houses to your houses and more fields to your fields until there is no room left for other people. Then you are left alone in the land.

I will send for all the peoples of the north,” says the Lord, “along with my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. I will bring them all against Judah, those who live there, and all the nations around you, too. I will completely destroy all those countries and leave them in ruins forever. People will be shocked when they see how badly I have destroyed those countries.

“Call for the archers to come against Babylon. Tell them to surround the city, and let no one escape. Pay her back for what she has done; do to her what she has done to other nations. Babylon acted with pride against the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

While they are stirred up, I will give a feast for them and make them drunk. They will shout and laugh. And they will sleep forever and never wake up!” says the Lord.

The enemy brings them in with hooks. He catches them in his net and drags them in his fishnet. So he rejoices and sings for joy.

Will he keep on taking riches with his net? Will he go on destroying people without showing mercy?

The evil nation is very proud of itself; it is not living as it should. But those who are right with God will live by faith.

Do all you can to live a peaceful life. Take care of your own business, and do your own work as we have already told you.

But God gives us even more grace, as the Scripture says, “God is against the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.”
