Saul agreed that the killing of Stephen was good. On that day the church of Jerusalem began to be persecuted, and all the believers, except the apostles, were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.

Saul was also trying to destroy the church, going from house to house, dragging out men and women and putting them in jail.

All the people who heard him were amazed. They said, “This is the man who was in Jerusalem trying to destroy those who trust in this name! He came here to arrest the followers of Jesus and take them back to the leading priests.”

When Saul went to Jerusalem, he tried to join the group of followers, but they were all afraid of him. They did not believe he was really a follower.

Never do anything that might hurt others—Jews, Greeks, or God’s church—

All the other apostles are greater than I am. I am not even good enough to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

I was so enthusiastic I tried to hurt the church. No one could find fault with the way I obeyed the law of Moses.

In the past I spoke against Christ and persecuted him and did all kinds of things to hurt him. But God showed me mercy, because I did not know what I was doing. I did not believe.

But the grace of our Lord was fully given to me, and with that grace came the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
