There were other people in the land who were not Israelites—Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

They were descendants of people that the Israelites had not destroyed. Solomon forced them to work for him as slaves, as is still true today.

The first people to come back and live in their own lands and towns were some Israelites, priests, Levites, and Temple servants.

Shephatiah, Hattil, Pokereth-Hazzebaim, and Ami.

Some people came to Jerusalem from the towns of Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Kerub, Addon, and Immer, but they could not prove that their ancestors came from Israel.

In the seventh year of King Artaxerxes more Israelites came to Jerusalem. Among them were priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, and Temple servants.

The Temple servants who lived on the hill of Ophel made repairs as far as a point opposite the Water Gate. They worked toward the east and the tower that extends from the palace.

The Temple servants and the descendants of the servants of Solomon totaled 392 people.

I bought male and female slaves, and slaves were also born in my house. I had large herds and flocks, more than anyone in Jerusalem had ever had before.

So let them live, but they will cut wood and carry water for our people.” So the leaders kept their promise to them.

Now, you will be placed under a curse to be our slaves. You will have to cut wood and carry water for the house of my God.”
