Violence has grown into a weapon for punishing wickedness. None of the people will be left—none of that crowd, none of their wealth, and nothing of value.

The wicked will not rule over those who do right. If they did, the people who do right might use their power to do evil.

They make fun of others and speak evil; proudly they speak of hurting others.

Their priests fell by the sword, but their widows were not allowed to cry.

Country of Philistia, don’t be happy that the king who struck you is now dead. He is like a snake that will give birth to another dangerous snake. The new king will be like a quick, dangerous snake to bite you.

The vineyard belonging to the Lord All-Powerful is the nation of Israel; the garden that he loves is the people of Judah. He looked for justice, but there was only killing. He hoped for right living, but there were only cries of pain.

Like the time you defeated Midian, you have taken away their heavy load and the heavy pole from their backs and the rod the enemy used to punish them.

So this is what the Lord says to Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah: “The people of Judah will not cry when Jehoiakim dies, saying: ‘Oh, my brother,’ or ‘Oh, my sister.’ They will not cry for him, saying: ‘Oh, master,’ or ‘Oh, my king.’

At that time those killed by the Lord will reach from one end of the earth to the other. No one will cry for them or gather up their bodies and bury them. They will be left lying on the ground like dung.

Jerusalem pours out her evil as a well pours out its water. The sounds of violence and destruction are heard within her. I can see the sickness and hurts of Jerusalem.

I will end the happy sounds of the bride and bridegroom. There will be no happy sounds in the cities of Judah or in the streets of Jerusalem, because the land will become an empty desert!

“ ‘This is what the Lord God says: You have gone far enough, you rulers of Israel! Stop being cruel and hurting people, and do what is right and fair. Stop forcing my people out of their homes, says the Lord God.

So the Lord God says: You have made my Temple unclean with all your evil idols and the hateful things you do. Because of this, as surely as I live, I will cut you off. I will have no pity, and I will show no mercy.

Take a few more and throw them into the fire and burn them up. From there a fire will spread to all the people of Israel.

“ ‘This is what the Lord God says: Clap your hands, stamp your feet, and groan because of all the hateful, evil things the people of Israel have done. They will die by war, hunger, and disease.

Those who are left alive and who escape will be on the mountains, moaning like doves of the valleys about their own sin.

“Human, the Lord God says this to the land of Israel: An end! The end has come on the four corners of the land.

“Make chains for captives, because the land is full of bloody crimes and the city is full of violence.

He said to me, “Do you see, human? Is it unimportant that the people of Judah are doing the hateful things they have done here? They have filled the land with violence and made me continually angry. Look, they are insulting me every way they can.

“The people don’t know how to do what is right,” says the Lord. “Their strong buildings are filled with treasures they took by force from others.”

You put off the day of punishment, but you bring near the day when you can do evil to others.

They want fields, so they take them; they want houses, so they take them away. They cheat people to get their houses; they rob them even of their property.

You eat my people’s flesh and skin them and break their bones; you chop them up like meat for the pot, like meat in a cooking pan.

The rich people of the city do cruel things. Its people tell lies; they do not tell the truth.

On the day that God will show his anger, neither their silver nor gold will save them. The Lord’s anger will be like a fire that will burn up the whole world; suddenly he will bring an end, yes, an end to everyone on earth.”

So you must show mercy to others, or God will not show mercy to you when he judges you. But the person who shows mercy can stand without fear at the judgment.
