When Elisha returned to Gilgal, there was a shortage of food in the land. While the groups of prophets were sitting in front of him, he said to his servant, “Put the large pot on the fire, and boil some stew for these men.”

I will speak using stories; I will tell secret things from long ago.

Heaven and earth, listen, because the Lord is speaking: “I raised my children and helped them grow up, but they have turned against me.

I will attack Jerusalem, and that city will be filled with sadness and crying. It will be like an altar to me.

The Lord said, “How terrible it will be for these stubborn children. They make plans, but they don’t ask me to help them. They make agreements with other nations, without asking my Spirit. They are adding more and more sins to themselves.

These people are like children who lie and refuse to obey; they refuse to listen to the Lord’s teachings.

But they turned against him and made his Holy Spirit very sad. So he became their enemy, and he fought against them.

The Lord spoke his word to me again: “What do you see?” I answered, “I see a pot of boiling water, tipping over from the north.”

The Lord said to me, “Disaster will come from the north and strike all the people who live in this country.

This city will not be your cooking pot, and you will not be the best meat in the middle of it. I will punish you at the border of Israel.

They say, ‘It is almost time for us to build houses. This city is like a cooking pot, and we are like the best meat.’

“So this is what the Lord God says: Those people you have killed and left in the middle of the city are like the best meat, and this city is like the cooking pot. But I will force you out of the city.

“Human, you are living among a people who refuse to obey. They have eyes to see, but they do not see, and they have ears to hear, but they do not hear, because they are a people who refuse to obey.

but I, the Lord, will speak. What I say will be done, and it will not be delayed. You refuse to obey, but in your time I will say the word and do it, says the Lord God.’ ”

“Say now to the people who refuse to obey: ‘Do you know what these things mean?’ Say: ‘The king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and took the king and important men of Jerusalem and brought them to Babylon.

“Human, give a riddle and tell a story to the people of Israel.

While he spoke to me, the Spirit entered me and put me on my feet. Then I heard the Lord speaking to me.

He said, “Human, I am sending you to the people of Israel. That nation has turned against me and broken away from me. They and their ancestors have sinned against me until this very day.

They may listen, or they may not, since they are a people who have turned against me. But they will know that a prophet has been among them.

You, human, don’t be afraid of the people or their words. Even though they may be like thorny branches and stickers all around you, and though you may feel like you live with poisonous insects, don’t be afraid. Don’t be afraid of their words or their looks, because they are a people who turn against me.

But you, human, listen to what I say to you. Don’t turn against me as those people do. Open your mouth and eat what I am giving you.”

Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! The people are saying about me, ‘He is only telling stories.’ ”

“ ‘This is what the Lord God says: How terrible it will be for the city of murderers! How terrible it will be for the rusty pot whose rust will not come off! Take the meat out of it, piece by piece. Don’t choose any special piece.

I am making you as hard as a diamond, harder than stone. Don’t be afraid of them or be frightened by them, though they are a people who turn against me.”

At that time people will make fun of you and sing this sad song about you: ‘We are completely ruined; the Lord has taken away my people’s land. Yes, he has taken it away from me and divided our fields among our enemies!’ ”

The Jewish leaders knew that the story was about them. So they wanted to find a way to arrest Jesus, but they were afraid of the people. So the leaders left him and went away.

Jesus said, “You have been chosen to know the secrets about the kingdom of God. But I use stories to speak to other people so that: ‘They will look, but they may not see. They will listen, but they may not understand.’

Stephen continued speaking: “You stubborn people! You have not given your hearts to God, nor will you listen to him! You are always against what the Holy Spirit is trying to tell you, just as your ancestors were.
